Zero waste gift wrap

Reusable gift wrap is great any time of year, but before the Holidays is a greta time to check in with this zero waste, money saving option.

Ali Barmas, led an eco crafting workshop at the library 11/13/25 and here are her top tips to join in and spread the word.

Save it! - Most people are used to saving gift bags and tissue, maybe reusing magazines or comic strips to re-wrap gifts. It’s also great to try fabric. It’s really easy to knot around a gift (check out Furoshiki techniques) or tie at the top with an elastic band or hair tie and add a ribbon or some flare. You can cut squares or circles from old clothing scraps, pillow cases, tea towels etc. Patterned bed sheets, bandanas, scarves or an old saree are also great options. The wrapping you choose can reflect the person you’re giving to and it can be reused over and over again!

Own it! - Have pride in resuing materials to craft for the climate! Some people feel a sense of shame in giving something “second hand” - STOP - own it, feel great and educate your receiver by adding a little card or note on how to reuse, or just tell them in person.

Elevate - adding some yarn, saved ribbon, a home made pompom or bit or origami can give your gift a lift. For the holidays you might add a cinnamon stick, a sprig of holly or a pinecone.
