‘Skip The Stuff’ signed into law for NJ!

Skip the Stuff Act (S3195/A5157) has been signed into law, reducing unnecessary single-use utensils and condiments for takeout and delivery.

Sofia Calderon, outgoing Student Representative for the LEC helped pass the ordinance for ‘Skip the Stuff’ in Livingston. She began going door to door to meet with local business owners and grew momentum and support by working with Beth Lippman at LIVBID, the Livingston Environmental Commission, Marta Young at Clean Water Action, Beyond Plastics and the Town Council. Passing this ordinance at the Municipal level is a driving force for action in the legislature and a head start on the education and preparation of our community before this was adopted by the state.

Your voice matters. Just deciding to do something is the only invitation you need to start creating change - just ask Sofia!

Thank you to all our young people driving change, and to our Township for supporting their action for the benefit of our shared environment.

The legislative lame duck session saw other wins for New Jersey:

  • New Jersey Protecting Against Climate Threats Resilient Environment and Landscapes (NJPACT REAL) Rules: Regulations are officially adopted upon publication in the NJ Register! They will come into effect later this year.

  • Food Waste Reduction Law (S2426/A2090) – Signed into law, requiring every solid-waste management district to develop plans to cut food waste by 50% by 2035 and expand composting.

  • Protecting Against Forever Chemicals Act (A1421/S1042): Signed into law, strengthening protections for our drinking water against PFAS.

  • Regulating Forever Chemicals in Fire Fighting Equipment (S5223/A5195) : Signed into law, protecting our first responders, public health and the environment.
