Make Polluters Pay to Make New Jersey More Affordable ACT
New Jersey must hold the world's largest fossil fuel polluters accountable and invest in affordability and climate resilience! If the Polluters don’t pay - we do.
January 26th saw the kickoff for the ‘Polluters Pay to Make New Jersey More Affordable Act’ Senate Bill 2338 (previously the ‘NJ Climate Superfund Act’). The virtual event gathered legislators and grass roots organizers to launch the 2026–2027 legislative session and build momentum to pass this Bill.
This event was part of a Week of Action being coordinated by the national Make Polluters Pay campaign and an important moment to re-engage and align advocates across the state.
The kickoff featured the bill’s prime sponsors, Senator John McKeon and Assemblywoman Alixon Collazos-Gill, Vice-Chair of the Environmental and Solid Waste Committee. The Bill has 46 cosponsors in the Assembly (out of 80 seats) and 19 cosponsors in the Senate (out of 40 seats). In addition, the Bill is supported by:
75 municipal and county resolutions covering 3.8 million New Jerseyans
130+ organizations in support
140+ elected officials in support
160 faith leaders and counting organized by GreenFaith!
New bill language has been provided to add positive amendments which include:
Dedicated 51% of revenue for projects in overburdened communities
Project Labor Agreements & prevailing wage provisions
Clarifying this bill doesn't create new regulations or new fees for consumers.
Annual reports on the program & how it's being implemented
Making Polluters Pay in New Jersey is within reach because of all the grassroots organizers across the state driving home the message of accountability and affordability in their communities.
