clean streams

How many of you have a stream near your home, or pass a stream driving around town? Livingston is part of the Passaic Watershed, but how often do we take time to enjoy and observe these waterways?

Let’s connect with our watershed.

  • Why Streams?

We want to connect with our watershed and monitor stream health by learning to identify certain physical and biological characteristics of our local streams.

Protection of our watersheds and coastal waters is one of the themes raised by our Student Mural Artists, Carolina Romero-Vasquez. Her piece “The Shimmering Seer”, drove a closer partnership with our local Watershed Ambassador, Anthony Tamberelli, to inspire the Clean Streams program.

In May 2025, team members from the LEC, LivGreen, and the Trails & Greenways Committee undertook training with Anthony, so that we would have hands on knowledge of how to undertake basic monitoring and continue to lead these activities in our community.

It's a chance to get in the river and dip a toe into action! There's even Rubber ducks!

  • What's involved?

Clean Streams will be Led by Nicolas Carzacacou, a Geologist and Water Quality Specialist, and Jacob Glazer our LEC Student Rep. Anthony will be staying on to advise us and we are very grateful for his support.

We plan to begin by sampling 3 stream locations in Livingston in Fall and Spring.

Participants will learn how to record Environmental observations, take measurements and samples as part of a team.

The program aims to share this information with the New Jersey Watershed Watch Network.

Perhaps more importantly the aim is that as a community we start to notice and see our waterways differently and connect with our role in stewarding river health.

Meet the Clean Streams Team

  • Toni Tamberelli

An environmental educator with a background in invasive jellyfish research, Toni sought to use their knowledge of the natural world for inspiring others to protect and appreciate it. They graduated from Montclair State University with a master’s in marine biology before joining the AmeriCorps NJ Watershed Ambassadors Program, where they conducted environmental stewardship services across the state. Now, they teach science labs at Montclair State and County College of Morris while also donating their free time for LivGreen’s Clean Streams program.

If you have any questions regarding the Clean Streams program or general watershed health, feel free to reach out to Toni at tamberellia@alumni.montclair.edu!
